Trial one-way system for Princes Risborough

PLANS for a trial one-way road system for Princes Risborough High Street have been given the green light by the town council.

It must now submit proposals to Buckinghamshire County Council (BCC) for approval, and to see whether the scheme can be implemented next year.

It is hoped the move will help to ease congestion in the town, and also contribute to long term rejuvenation.

Cllr Alan Turner, chairman of the council and town mayor, explained at last week's town council meeting the proposal was just the first step of a two point plan.

He said: Phase one is a one-way system operating, and phase two would be street enhancement improvements.'' He added that tackling the regeneration in this way would be the most economically feasible way for the council to introduce the scheme.

Cllr Turner explained he had also met other interested groups around the town, such as Risborough Area Community Action, "to make sure we're all singing from the same hymn sheet."

Councillors agreed the trial period for the plan had to be long enough to allow pedestrians and drivers to get used to it.

Cllr John Coombs said: "I think the trial period's got to be for a significant amount of time - six or eight months, to get a view of where it's going.'' But the scheme is still some way off, with costs still to be determined and approval needed from BCC.

Cllr Turner said: "I don't think, in practical terms, it could happen before April next year."

It is hoped that, eventually, a one-way system could allow for wider pavements and help Princes Risborough develop a café culture to draw more people to the town.
