Olympic handover ceremony for Wycombe

CELEBRATIONS will be held in High Wycombe on Sunday to mark the official handover of the Olympic Games to London.

An official Olympic handover flag will be raised outside Wycombe District Council's offices at 3.30pm on Sunday.

Local athletes will receive the flag at a Chinese lion display outside High Wycombe Library in Eden and then walk to the offices in Queen Victoria Road.

Clubs will have displays at the library from 2pm.

The flag will be one of more than 500 to be raised at government, embassy and military bases around the UK to celebrate the handover.

Council chairman councillor Roger Wilson said: "The Wycombe district is home to a wealth of sporting talent, both young and old.

"As the sun sets on Great Britain's most successful Olympics to date in Beijing, we now look forward to hosting the next Olympic Games and achieving the same feat with the wealth of talent that is available."

Cllr Steve Adams, community services portfolio spokesman for Buckinghamshire County Council said: "As a hosting county, with Dorney Lake, and the birthplace of the paralympics at Stoke Mandeville, I feel it is very important for Bucks to engage with the Olympic spirit.

"I am delighted to have this opportunity to join with communities across the country to mark the handover of the flag from Beijing to London".

Chairman of the London 2012 Organising Committee, Sebastian Coe said: "When the Mayor of London accepts the Olympic Flag on 24th August, the eyes of the world will turn to London and the UK as the next summer host city.

"It is a very important and exciting moment for us, and we want as many people as possible to join in the handover celebrations.

"We are delighted that so many local authorities share our excitement and are proudly displaying the Olympic handover flag to mark this very special moment on our journey to 2012."

What on earth have the Olympics got to do with Wycombe? In 2012 the nearest we are likely to be involved is watching it on TV.

There are more important issues in this town than raising a flag to something that the majority of the population care little about. I suppose it provides a good photo opportunity though.

and that sums you up Ivor
If it doesn't directly involve Wycombe you couldn't care less

Bad bad attitude showing what a small town mind you have.

I think its brilliant and it is getting LOCAL athletes - some of whom might aspire to be in the 2012 Olympics a chance to do something.
Poor show Ivor - by that post it shows your ignorance.

I would prefer Wycombe District Council to back a campaign to support Marlow Bottom residents in their efforts to honour Steve Redgrave for his Olympic achievements, they should be allowed their permanent memento.

I agree with that as well but do not expect Ivor too. It is after all not in Wycombe.

I too would like to see Mr Redgrave honoured for his sporting achievements as he is one of our local heroes.

Well Wycombe Sports Centre has applied to be one of the major training centre for overseas teams during the 2012 Olympics.

If it is still standing and the main hall floor hasn't broken up that is.

STOP calling sportsmen and women heroes, they are nothing of the sort. They are doing a job they love and enjoy.
They are not risking life and limb to try and win their medals!
I've nothing against honouring Sir Steve but he's not a hero.

There are many youngsters in the wycombe area training hard with the view of representing GB in 2012. Lets give them as much encouragment as possible.

Big statue of Sir Steve in the middle of Higginson Park anyone? Oh, it's already there. Why honour the big fella twice?

Phredd are you serious? Wycombe Sports Centre has applied to be a place where the athletes train? You think anyone would actually want to go there?!

David St - anyone that can dedicate their life, go out there, be the best of their game, and beat the best of the best IN THE WORLD is a hero to me. That's dedication and talent right there, something for kids and other people to aspire to.

Have you looked up the definition of Hero lately, well not to worry because I have done it for you:

HERO:

1. In mythology and legend, a man, often of divine ancestry, who is endowed with great courage and strength, celebrated for his bold exploits, and favored by the gods.

2. A person noted for feats of courage or nobility of purpose, especially one who has risked or sacrificed his or her life: soldiers and nurses who were heroes in an unpopular war.

3. A person noted for special achievement in a particular field
