Craftsman shows his mettle
A CITY of London company which dates back to the 14th century has awarded a metal craftsman with a prestigious title.
Adrian Doble, of Dean Lane, Cookham Dean, has been made a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Pewterers.
The craftsman received the accolade for nearly two decades of working with pewter- a silver coloured metal which is an alloy of tin.
He started a business - Partners in Pewter - with his wife and fellow pewterer Lesley after becoming regular pupils at evening design and art classes in Marlow.
At their garden studio the pair make pens, coasters, bookmarks, decorative panels, pendants and ornaments from the silvery metal.
Mr Doble, who quit his job at Glaxo-Smith Kline to turn his hobby into a business, said: "It was a total change but we're glad we did it - there's nothing quite like working for yourself. It's a privilege to be made a liverymen.
"The Livery Companies exist to increase the public awareness of their particular trade and we have been playing our part from our garden studio in Cookham Dean."
"One of the great things about Pewter is that it's a beautiful shiny material and stays shiny, it's not toxic and it's environmentally friendly."
Mr Doble, was made a Freeman two years ago in recognition for promoting Pewter by exhibiting at shows and by giving talks and lessons in the Maidenhead area.
"I was very keen to get involved in promoting Pewter and becoming a liverymen means I have the chance to be on a committee which is responsible for promoting it."
The artistic couple, whose work includes commissions for Rotary International at Windsor St George, churches and other organisations and will exhibit at Stonor Park this weekend.
