'We're not out of it by a long shot'

GERRARDS Cross CC have come out fighting after slipping into the bottom half of the table for the first time this season.

They went down to league leaders Farnham Royal last weekend to fall back to seventh place, 48 points off the lead.

But, with 12 games still to play, Cross captain Jon Newell insists their promotion campaign is far from over.

He said: "We're not out of it, not by a long shot.

"We know what we are capable of doing and we know what we have to do.

"We were in a similar position last year and went on a winning run. We have to go on another one now and if we do I think a few sides had better watch out."

Cross were about 30 runs short of a very handy total batting first at Farnham last time out.

Opener Malky Dhaliwal fell first ball, but a second-wicket stand of 108 from George Eykyn (43) and Alan Duncan (50) restored order and at 160-3 at lunch Cross were well-placed to set their hosts a tough target.

But three wickets in four overs slowed their momentum, and although Mark Wright (49) and Ben Ingrey (43 off 28 balls) provided a late spurt, 238 in 60 overs always looked vulnerable on a good batting track.

The Royals wasted no time attacking it, with 65 runs coming off the first ten overs of their reply.

And although Cross were able to snare three scalps, Krishmar Santokie followed up his seven-wicket haul to blast 43 off 18 balls to steer Farnham home with seven wickets in hand.

But Gerrards Cross, who were within a game of winning the league after an inconsistent start last season, refuse to be downcast.

Newell said: "The talent in the side and the way the team has been gelling together this season has been fantastic.

"I'd like to have been able to pick a more consistent 11 and we've had a few losses, but it's not the end of world.

"It's still quite tight and the next couple of weeks are very important for us.

"We've got Wokingham and Finchampstead and we need a couple of wins to stay in it."
